![]() ![]() They swell and stretch to a size I can just barely imagine. Yet in his largeness nothing gets lost Not a man, not a mouse, slips through the cracks.” Think about those words - meteoric, astronomic, titanic, oceanic. Psalm 36:5-6 says, “God’s love is meteoric, his loyalty astronomic, His purpose titanic, his verdicts oceanic. The God who said, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end” (Revelation 22:13) put all of His power and rights aside and came to the earth in the most vulnerable way possible - and He did it to save His creation from their sin and separation from God.Īs huge as His Alpha and Omega name is, I don’t want that bigness to scare you away. The Alpha and Omega who hung the sun and moon, separated the waters from the earth, created every wild creature and beating human heart, He funneled His immensity into an embryo and was born a baby. At the chosen, right moment, Jesus stepped into time. “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son” Galatians 4:4 says. You see, the Christmas story is all about how the Alpha and Omega, the One who is outside, beyond and bigger than human time, stepped into it so He could save us. Then in the New Testament, Paul explains to the church members in Colossae how Jesus is not only before all things, but “in him all things hold together,” which brings us to the Christmas season. Verses throughout the Bible poetically recall the earth’s foundations being set, the mountains being formed, the earth filling up with life - all giving glory to God as the one who did this work. The Gospel of John opens by telling us more specifically that Jesus (the Word) was there in the beginning. The Bible begins by telling us that God existed before the beginning of creation. In declaring Himself the Alpha and Omega, Jesus is saying that exactly. They are bookends holding everything together, end to end. Now, if you were a part of Greek life in your college days, you may already know that alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and omega the final. When Jesus calls Himself the “Alpha and Omega” in Revelation 22:13 (He also says this in Revelation 21:6), John is in the middle of receiving the revelation he’ll later write down in the Greek language. So, let’s just start with the basics: the alphabet. Of all the names and titles Jesus holds (you are seriously in for a treat these next few weeks), this one comes with a bit of a powerful-beyond-imagination, head-spinning kind of feeling. I’ll be honest: when I signed up to write about Jesus’ name “Alpha and Omega” for this year’s Advent devotional (Welcome in, by the way! I’m so glad you’re here.), I was a little intimidated.
